Today it's been exactly three weeks since we arrived in the US. The traveling was long and exhausting. We had to spend the night at the Beijing airport, and the 12 hour flight to Chicago was a little piece of hell high up in the air. But even little bits of hell end eventually, and around 11 a.m. we arrived in Los Angeles, without any problems along the way.
In LA we found Andrew's brother and dad waiting for us. After a couple of decent hugs, we went off to the first stop: In'N'Out! When it comes to burgers, that's the place to go in the South-West!
After lunch we went to our new home: Grandpa Jack's house. Jack is an elderly gentleman with a heart that matches his belly! While we stay with him we help out with cleaning, cooking, and try to create a happy home for the three of us. It takes a bit of give-and-take on all sides, but so far it's worked out beautifully!
The house is definitely big enough for the three of us, and even our daughter will fit in nicely. There's a nice big back yard, even though it needs a good cleaning. There's a lemon tree and an orange tree in the back yard too. Both of which carry fruit pretty much the year round.
The first week we mostly went out to eat with family and friends and we cleaned up the house a bit. We still need to get some stuff (like a decent bed) and sort through some things, but it's already coming together nicely!
The weekend of January 20th, we went to Sacramento with Andrew's parents. It's the California state capitol. Andrew's dad had to be there for a bowling convention, and we were invited along. The hotel room was already paid for, so that made it ideal for our low budget. We visited the State Capitol, Railroad Museum and History Museum, and the old town. It was very pretty and cosy.
Hmmm.
Last Thursday Andrew's uncle Nate and his Chinese girlfriend invited us along to Disneyland, which was a blast! I had to take it easy because of the pregnancy and the heat, but it was a beautiful and very relaxing day. We just enjoyed each other's company, the short waiting lines and the magical scenery.
Afterward, Rita cooked some lovely Chinese food for us, which made it feel like we were back in China for a bit.
We're enjoying the beautiful weather and lovely people. When I first came to the US, I thought the friendliness was over the top and it even felt a bit fake to me. I couldn't get used to it. After a couple of years in China, however, it makes for a wonderful change to hear people say 'hello' and 'thank you' on a regular basis. It's also nice to be able to communicate with pretty much everyone without a problem. I find myself doing a lot more talking!
And a final quick pregnancy update: nothing much going on except for the fact that I'm gaining more weight than I should. California food probably plays the biggest part in that. I'm trying to focus on whole foods and natural choices though. Still, there's so much temptation lurking around. It's a good thing I spent most of the pregnancy in China!
I had to go shopping for some new maternity wear as well since my winter sweaters weren't quite so comfortable in 85° weather.
Our past and current adventures in China, Belgium and the US making our way to a permanent home.
Leaving China - China Verlaten
Nederlands
Ondertussen eten we veel.

The time has come. We're almost out of here.
On January 10th our flight leaves from Beijing to Chicago, where we'll get a flight back to Los Angeles. On Monday January 9th we'll fly to Beijing in the evening to wait for our Chicago flight the next morning at 7. We'll be at the airport for about 9 hours.
Our immigration case is still not finished, but will now be transferred to the Belgian embassy. The Guangzhou consulate had given us February 1st as an interview date, but that meant too much waiting time for us with the pregnancy. How it'll go in Belgium, we'll have to see later.
So what have we been up to the last couple of weeks?
On Christmas day we had to vacate our old apartment. It wasn't easy since it has really been a home for us in the last two years. We are currently staying at a vacant apartment of a friend's friend. It's huge and empty, and thus very very cold. During the day we stay with friends, at night we go back to the apartment to sleep. We're pretty much camping out in the bedroom and keep the heater going at full speed the whole night. Without heating, it's about 40°, with the heating we can get it to about 62, which is good enough to sleep.
In the mean time, we eat a lot. We spend lots of time relaxing with our friends and are enjoying the last days of snow.
With the pregnancy, everything is going well too. We now know that our future baby is a girl and already have a name in mind. I rest a lot and have noticed that certain things are requiring more energy than before. Things such as climbing stairs, carrying heavy bags and standing for long stretches of time. So I do those things a little less than before (that's where the hubby comes in).
There you go. That's it. The last update from China. After January 10th all the news will come from the States. After February 20th, it'll be from Belgium again. 'Till soon!

Start of Winter
Nederlands (English below)
Kerstmis in Amerika?

It's official: Winter has started. We've had our first snow. It's been under 30°F. I've taken out the long-johns and have been making soup and hot chocolate. And we're still in China!
A little about the immigration first.
We heard from the embassy that they had sent us a letter, but that the post office returned it. They then said it would be easier for us to just collect all the paperwork we need, and then let me know when we have everything. That should be something next week. We'll then send them a letter, after which they should invite us for an interview.
Christmas in the States? We sure hope so, and it may still be in the cards for us!
Apart from that life in Yantai is going smoothly. We're busy teaching, which helps us save up for when we'll be unemployed in the US and Belgium. We also do enjoy the extra time we have with our friends here. It's a great comfort to feel surrounded by people we love and who love us, even if we're still heart-breakingly far away from family.
Skype has been a life-saver too! Don't know what I'd do without it!
And how is the third member of our little family faring?
Our little Happy Bean is not so much a bean anymore as a medium-sized cucumber. At 8-9 ounces and 6 inches (according to the websites) it's now definitely a force to be reckoned with.
The little one has a great time swimming, tumbling and kicking around inside, and I get to feel it's movements. Andrew has now felt them too, which makes things so much more tangible for him. I'm planning to get the next ultrasound somewhere after 20 weeks to hopefully figure out which pronoun I can use to refer to 'it' from now on.
I want to wish all of you a belated Happy Thanksgiving too. We spent it with our colleagues and friends, enjoying great food, wonderful conversation and unintelligible American football (there's got to be a 'Dummies' book for that). No turkey, but plenty of other stuff to make up for it.
What am I grateful for this year? My amazing husband, our soon-to-be baby, supportive family, interesting and exciting friends, and -despite having to stay longer than expected- our wonderful life in China.
